Bessemer City lies about ten minutes south of Cherryville on NC-274, with US-29/74 running through it and the Kings Mountain ridge just to the southwest. The town was founded on iron and named for the Bessemer steel process, and that is not just history — the mineral belt that made it a mining town is the same rock an excavator finds a few feet down today.
This is the shallowest rock in Gaston County. On plenty of Bessemer City lots a footing trench, a utility line or a deep drainage run will reach stone before it reaches design depth, which changes both the method and the price. In-town lots are also compact and older, so there is rarely room to swing a large machine.
We probe for rock before we quote here rather than after, because the difference between digging clay and breaking stone is the difference between two numbers that are not close to each other. Where rock is unavoidable we say so up front and price it, instead of writing a change order once the bucket stops.

Excavation & Grading Contractor in Bessemer City, Gaston County
Bessemer City was laid out in the 1890s around iron and mining interests, and the Kings Mountain mineral belt beneath it has been worked in one form or another ever since. Textiles followed, as they did across the county. The defining physical challenge is unambiguous: this is rock country, and any job that goes more than a few feet down has to account for it.
Common Projects in Bessemer City
Driveway work leads, because it stays above the rock. Small demolition and lot clearing come next on older in-town properties. Drainage correction is the third, and it is the one most affected by geology — you cannot always dig the trench you would like, so the grading solution has to work at shallower depth.
What the Ground Does Here
Clay over rock with the shallowest ledges in the county in spots, a legacy of the mineral belt this town was founded on.
Getting Equipment In
US-29/74 and NC-274 carry equipment easily; older in-town lots are compact.

Why Bessemer City Property Owners
Call Us
We Know Gaston County
Bessemer City sits on the mineral belt that gave it its name. We probe for shallow rock before quoting, so a trench price is a real price.
The owner runs the job
Rodney quotes it and Rodney does it. No gap between what you were told and what happens on site.
The price is written down
A number on paper after we have walked the ground. It does not move unless you ask for something different.
Insured for $1 million
Certificate available on request, for you, your builder or your HOA.
Water gets dealt with
Most of what we are called to fix is somebody else’s drainage. We grade so water leaves.
We clean up after ourselves

There is a fair chance on anything that goes more than a few feet down. The mineral belt the town was founded on runs right under it. We check at the estimate and tell you honestly, because rock changes the method and the number.
Usually yes. If rock limits trench depth we solve it with surface grading, a shaped swale and a proper outfall instead of a deep pipe. The water still leaves — it just takes a different route.
