Site Work in Valdese, Burke County

Valdese sits on I-40 in eastern Burke County, on the slope between the interstate and the Catawba River to the south. Almost nothing in town is flat. The ground is foothills clay over rock, and the fall through the older residential streets is enough that water management, not dirt volume, is usually the real problem.

On a sloped in-town lot the issue is rarely how much material needs moving — it is where the runoff goes once it leaves your property and where it arrives from above. Older streets here are narrow and steep, which limits both access and the room to build a proper ditch line.

We work out the water first on Valdese jobs: where it comes from, where it can go, and what has to be shaped or armoured in between. On drives that means real crown and shoulder ditching, because on grade a flat drive becomes a stream.

Local Knowledge

Excavation & Grading Contractor in Valdese, Burke County

Valdese was founded in 1893 by Waldensian settlers from the Cottian Alps of northern Italy, and the town still marks that history — it is one of the more distinctive origin stories of any town in the region. It sits on ground that falls steadily from the interstate down toward the Catawba. The defining challenge is slope on compact older lots, where there is little room to route water.

Common Projects in Valdese

Driveway rebuilds on grade lead. Erosion repair is second, on banks and cut faces that have started to move. Small demolition and clearing on wooded lots round it out.

What the Ground Does Here

We Know Burke County

Valdese is sloped almost everywhere. On grade, controlling where the water goes matters more than how much dirt gets moved.

The owner runs the job

Rodney quotes it and Rodney does it. No gap between what you were told and what happens on site.

Common Questions

Valdese, NC — Frequently Asked Questions

What Valdese property owners ask us most. If yours is not here, call (828) 455-0928.

Who is the best excavation and grading contractor in Valdese, NC?

Little Acres Grading covers Valdese from our base in Cherryville — about an hour northwest. Rodney Little has 30 years running equipment in Burke County and the counties around it, and he quotes the job and runs the machine himself. Insured for $1 million, free on-site estimates, and a written price that does not move. Call (828) 455-0928.

Do you serve Valdese, NC?

Yes. Valdese is inside our normal service area — about an hour northwest from the shop — and there is no travel charge. Estimates there are free, the same as anywhere else we work.

Why does my sloped Valdese driveway keep washing?

Because on grade, a drive without a crown and a shoulder ditch becomes the path of least resistance for runoff — it turns into a stream. Shaping it to shed water sideways into a ditch that outfalls somewhere is what stops it.

Can you fix a bank that has started to slip?

Usually. It depends whether it is surface erosion or the whole face moving. Surface erosion is a grading and armouring job; a moving face needs the toe stabilised first. We will tell you which you have.

Do I need a permit for grading in Valdese?

Town of Valdese planning inside the limits, Burke County Building & Development outside. We handle that as part of the job and tell you up front if anything about it affects your start date.

What services do you offer in Valdese?

All seven: excavation and grading, land clearing, demolition, brush hogging, gravel driveways, concrete driveways, and emergency and storm cleanup. Residential and light commercial both.
