Stanley sits on the Gaston–Lincoln line, reached straight out NC-27 from Cherryville, with NC-275 running through it. The ground rolls — deep clay on the uplands that turns soft in the draws between them — and there is rock on the ridges toward the Lincoln County side. Mountain Island Lake lies to the east.
